12th January 2017 was billed as the big one as far as UK snowfall went for massive disruption from heavy snowfall. This was enough to get the SA guys into a frenzy of excited planning as they scoured the media for positive news... by 3pm the best they could hope for was patchy sleet and a light dusting on the hilltops by evening. In true style though they decided to go for it anway...
Heading off from Aberdare, South Wales at 9pm it was bitterly cold and the sleet had given way to very wet snow that was sticking in places. The fatbikes charged enthusiastically toward the foot of the Rhigos Mountain...
Less than half a mile into the climb, one of the guys was way back realising that the worst had happened... in less than optimal conditions, he'd punctured. Snow and wind was starting to pick up now, so the delay was frustrating.
Preparation is always the key to success on any adventure and we had none of it... The can of tyre gunk sprayed only over goggles and gloves and not in the tyre, and the one compressed air bulb barely registered in the 4" fat tyre, adding insult to injury by freeze burning already frozen hands. After much swearing, our only spare innertube saved the day and we could continue.
At the top of the Rhigos, turning off into the forestry lead to magical conditions, though they were also in a serious blizzard by that point.
Even the snow ploughs had to stop for a break on the way down!
